Stop asking: "How do we rank for X?"
Start asking: "Who is the source the model cites when someone asks about X?"

You also stop treating SEO as separate from content, engineering, and brand. Recommendation is the output of all four working in the same direction.

Replace ten thin pages with one primary source
A client had ten blog posts orbiting a single category definition. None ranked well, none got cited, and every model synthesis answered the category question from a competitor's page.
We consolidated to one page. Rewrote it as a definition the model could quote in a single sentence. Added matching DefinedTerm schema. Redirected the ten.
Citations on that category's queries tripled in four weeks. Rankings went up too, but rankings were the tell, not the target.
Rewrite your comparison grid to be quotable
Most comparison pages list vague tradeoffs ("best for small teams," "most flexible"). Models reach for concrete, claim-level statements ("supports N seats," "exports in formats X, Y, Z").
We rewrote one client's comparison page to make every claim a quotable fact. Added ItemList schema with nested Things. Added side-by-side Offer nodes where prices differed.
Within six weeks, the page was cited directly in AI Overviews for six of ten tracked queries. Traffic was flat. Leads from organic doubled.
Kill the content calendar
A client was publishing two posts a week, mostly riffs on the category. We cut the calendar entirely and committed to one primary-source page every two weeks — the opposite cadence of what most "content strategies" recommend.
Nine months in, the rewritten set of pages accounts for 78% of inbound attributable to organic. The two-a-week era accounts for the rest, and declines.
The metric that tells the truth
Citation share.
Pick the ten queries that matter most in your category. Run them in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Count how many times you're cited.
Do it weekly. Watch the number move.
That's the metric. Rankings, impressions, session durations — those are supporting evidence. Citation share is the thing.
A quick gut-check
